This talk will give an overview of the influence of hydrodynamics on nitrogen uptake by marine macrophytes (C. nodosa, Z. noltii and C. prolifera) within Cadiz Inner Bay. Examples from flume studies and in-situ measurments under natural hydrodynamic conditions will be used to demonstrate how plant canopy and land-scape properties interact with hydrodynamics to determine ammonium uptake rates. Furthermore, we will present new in situ results suggesting that marine macrophytes can readily utilise different forms of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Considering that > 90 % of the dissolved N within the water column is organic, uptake of DON by macrophytes within Cadiz Inner Bay must be a major pathway for transfer of N to the benthos.
